Letters from Women in Pharmacy: Stories on Integrating Life and Career focuses on the unique challenges and opportunities faced by women in pharmacy. This collection of 31 personal letters represents experiences of women from a wide array of backgrounds and career paths. Each letter is filled with practical advice, insights, and compelling stories on developing strong support systems and maintaining healthy perspectives on the many roles that women balance to inspire generations of future pharmacy leaders.
This Letters publication was stimulated by the ASHP 2016 Women in Pharmacy Leadership Steering Committee recommendation to ASHP: Proactively collect and share stories, case studies and scenarios of how women have addressed gender, workplace, work-life integration, and leadership challenges. The power of this publication comes from each person’s specific journey, all unique but similar in reaching for their potential as both a pharmacist and woman. It emphasizes the multiple successful approaches to blending a career and personal life.
Sara J. White, RPh, MS, FASHP
Sara J. White is Director of Pharmacy (Ret.), Stanford University Hospital and Clinics, Palo Alto, CA. She is currently a primary faculty member for the ASHP Education and Research Foundation’s Pharmacy Leadership Academy and Leaders Innovation Masters Series programs and a pharmacy leadership coach. She previously served as Associate Director, Director of Clinical Education, and Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center and School of Pharmacy for 20 years. She graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy. After graduation, White worked at the University of Oregon Medical Center and Emanuel Hospital in Portland for 2 years. She then earned her Master of Science degree at The Ohio State University and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at The Ohio State University Hospitals and Clinics.
Ms. White has served as President of the Greater Kansas City Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Kansas Society of Hospital Pharmacists, and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. She has also served ASHP as Chair of the House of Delegates, a board member, and a council member. She has received multiple awards for her contributions to pharmacy, including the Kansas Hospital Pharmacist of the Year Award, Kansas Pharmacist of the Year Award, Harold N. Godwin Lecture Award, Lambda Kappa Sigma Vanguard Leadership Award, Clifton J. Latiolais Award, John A. Webb Lecture Award, Ohio State Jack L. Beal Postbaccalaureate Award, ASHP Distinguished Leadership Award, and the Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award.
Susan Teil Boyer, MS, FASHP
Susan Teil Boyer is Senior Consultant, ASHP Consulting; Past Board Member, ASHP; and Faculty, ASHP Education and Research Foundation’s Pharmacy Leadership Academy. She is the former Executive Director of the Washington State Board of Pharmacy. She earned her MS in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University and her BS from the University of Washington.
Hannah K. Vanderpool, PharmD, MA
Hannah K. Vanderpool is Vice President, Office of Member Relations, ASHP, Bethesda, MD. She also serves as the Primary Preceptor, Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management, ASHP. Dr. Vanderpool earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Drake University and her MA in Organizational Management from The George Washington University.
