As outpatient care continues to tip the balance against inpatient care, pharmacists are increasingly focused on finding and attaining a place as ambulatory care clinicians. Not only is the shift from inpatient to outpatient dramatic, it is occurring alongside changes to the fundamental business models of care delivery. Building a Successful Ambulatory Care Practice: Advancing Patient Care, 2nd Edition, addresses the changes that have occurred in ambulatory care practice in recent years. It gives pharmacists both the information they need to make effective plans in the contemporary environment and the tools needed to implement them.

Description

Building a Successful Ambulatory Care Practice, now in its second edition, continues to provide aspiring ambulatory care pharmacists with information on how to create and manage a pharmacist-led ambulatory care service. The book provides multiple chapters that systematically walk clinicians through the process of establishing clinical services in an ambulatory care setting.

Purpose

This updated reference continues to serve as a comprehensive guide for pharmacy practitioners who wish to establish pharmacist-led ambulatory care services.

Pharmacist involvement in direct patient care continues to improve and so this book fits nicely in the much-needed armamentarium of important ambulatory care resources. Evidence supporting the benefits of pharmacist involvement in direct patient care continues to grow and this book does an excellent job explaining how to build, manage, and advertise pharmacist-led ambulatory care clinical services.

Audience

Both new and seasoned pharmacists with an interest in ambulatory care services will find this resource helpful. Although this book is designed with the practitioner in mind, pharmacists in postgraduate training with an interest in ambulatory care will find this resource helpful, particularly when trying to develop a new clinic. It continues to be multifunctional as both practitioners and pharmacy residents can utilize this resource.

Features

This book is organized nicely and the chapters provide readers with a sequence of steps that ambulatory care pharmacists would need to take in order to develop and maintain their practice site. Chapters include topics such as steps needed to build an ambulatory care practice, marketing, optimal use of informational technology, and generating revenue through healthcare reimbursement. The book is well referenced and includes chapter objectives and summaries. Additionally, readers will find case-based scenarios of a pharmacist working with a physician throughout the book. This was incorporated to provide clinicians with solutions to common issues encountered when trying to develop a new service.

Assessment

Given the continued expansion of clinical pharmacy services and the rapidly changing role of pharmacist participation in direct patient care, this resource continues to provide useful information to those who wish to build or expand their ambulatory care services. Key points are highlighted throughout and the resources provided help to make this a thorough, appreciated resource for those wishing to build an effective ambulatory care service.
